Why LASIK Remains a Popular Corrective Eye Surgery in Columbus, Ohio

LASIK vision correction surgery has become one of the most common elective procedures performed in the US. More than 10 million Americans have undergone this life changing surgery since the Food and Drug Administration approved it in 1999, and researchers estimate that over 700,000 procedures are performed each year.

Since its inception, LASIK, which is an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, has advanced and become even more precise. Such refinements have increased patient satisfaction and improved their vision manifold. While other procedures have emerged, LASIK continues to be the go-to vision correction effort for the right candidate yearning to avoid having to rely on glasses or contact lenses.

Determining A Patient's Candidacy

All LASIK recipients undergo a thorough eye examination prior to the procedure. Though popular and usually well-tolerated, not everyone is an optimal candidate. Comprehensive eye tests will enable doctors to create a detailed map of the patient's eyes, which helps the refractive surgeon determine who would most benefit from the procedure.

The LASIK Procedure

LASIK is used to remedy common vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea’s capacity to focus.

During the procedure's first stage, surgeons create what is known as a flap on the top surface of the cornea with use of a precise femtosecond laser. This sets the stage for corneal reshaping using an excimer laser. The flap is then replaced, and healing often rapidly commences. In total, most operations only last for 10 minutes.

Most recipients notice improvements in their vision within as little as 24 hours.

The Recovery Process

Once the procedure is completed, the patient spends a brief period in recovery. Prior to being discharged, the performing surgeon examines the eye and, if all is as expected, the patient is free to leave. Transportation home should be arranged ahead of time.

Patients might experience mild itching, burning, or blurry vision immediately following the surgery. That said, such occurrences are usually short-lived and often dissipate by the following morning. Complete vision outcome is usually achieved by 1 month but can be as early as 1 day to 7 days.
