What Eye Conditions Make Me a Candidate for Refractive Surgery or Lasik?

When looking into procedures to improve the eyesight, such as Refractive or Lasik surgery, candidates may wonder if it is right for them. Eye improvement surgery is a big step. Every individual who is looking into surgery should know for sure that their eye condition qualifies them for a Refractive or Lasik procedure.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is the condition in which someone can see objects near to them clearly but have trouble seeing objects that are farther away. Severe nearsightedness causes an individual to only be able to see a few inches in front of them. Nearsightedness often starts during childhood and are noticed by things such as constant squinting or the need to hold a book close to the face in order to read. Other symptoms include blurry vision when looking at distant objects, the need to partially close the eyelids in order to see, headaches caused by eyestrain or difficulty seeing while driving.

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is the condition in which someone can clearly see objects that are farther away but have trouble with closer objects. The amount of farsightedness an individual may have obtained may limit their focusing ability. Severe farsightedness results in receiving clear vision only at a great distance. Far sightedness usually starts at birth and runs in families. Symptoms for farsightedness include blurriness of nearby objects, the need to squint to see clearly, eyestrain or aching around the eyes or experiencing discomfort due to tasks such as reading.

Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of the eye. This condition occurs when the cornea of the eye contains a curvature on one side that is different than the other. Instead of the surface of the eye being smooth, there are areas in which it is flatter or steeper. The condition of astigmatism blurs images in all directions. Often it is combined with nearsightedness or farsightedness that was obtained at birth. Signs for astigmatism include symptoms such as blurry or distorted vision, strain against the eyes or severe headaches.

Eye improvement surgeries are serious business and not to be taken lightly. Severe eye conditions are the only reasons to partake in Refractive or Lasik surgery as every surgery has its risks. Talk to a doctor before making a decision to be sure it is the right choice. Although it has its risks, eye improvement surgery has been changing the lives of people everywhere, as now they can finally see.
