MEET WENDY A. KIRKLAND, M.D.
Dr. Kirkland is a board certified cataract and glaucoma specialist. She has been with Arena Eye Surgeons since 2013 and her specialities include complex cataract surgery, minimally invasive and traditional glaucoma surgery as well as a variety of glaucoma laser procedures.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
Dr. Kirkland is a native of Columbus. She grew up in Dublin and graduated high school from the Wellington School in Upper Arlington. She went on to pursue a a combined BS/MD degree at the University of Akron and Northeast Ohio Medical University. While in medical school she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and graduated at the top of her class. She went on to pursue a preliminary medicine year at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, while her husband Ryan was finishing his dermatology residency. Dr. Kirkland and her husband then moved to Washington DC where she would spend 3 years completing her ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center. During her final year of residency she served as chief resident. She continued her glaucoma training in New York City at the prestigious New York Eye and Ear Infirmary under the direction of Dr. Robert Ritch and Dr. Jeffrey Liebmann, former president of the American Glaucoma Society.
SKILLS & EXPERTISE
Dr. Kirkland enjoys performing cataract surgery and a variety of glaucoma procedures with Arena Eye Surgeons in Columbus and Delaware. She specializes in combination procedures where cataract and glaucoma are treated simultaneously in order to provide her patients with the most optimal long term results. She was recently honored in Columbus Monthly's Top Doctors edition for 2022 and 2023 and received an Exceptional Women in Medicine Distinction from Castle Connolly in 2022. In addition, she is an oral board examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology as she helps usher in the newest generation of board certified ophthalmologists. She enjoys educating others as she commonly has other physicians in training shadow her in the clinic.
EXTRACURRICULAR INVOLVEMENT
To add to her education, Dr. Kirkland studied abroad for a year at the New York University in Florence, Italy. She engulfed herself in Art History before she returned to the states to attend the University of Akron to begin her Ophthalmology journey. She is a member of many Medical Societies such as the American Glaucoma Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She served as the Chief Resident at Washington Hospital Center in Georgetown at the University Department of Ophthalmology.
HOBBIES & PERSONAL INTERESTS
Dr. Kirkland decided to relocate back to the Columbus area to remain close to family. She resides in Upper Arlington with her husband Ryan, who is a practicing Mohs surgeon, and her two young children, Nolan and Camille. She loves spending time with her family, staying active, and traveling.
